Is this a scam?

Got a strange call, pop-up, text or email? Answer seven quick questions. Nothing is sent anywhere.

A call, text, email or pop-up you didn’t ask for.

02Do they say something is wrong?

A virus, a hacked account, a refund, a strange charge or a package problem.

03Are they rushing or scaring you?

Threats, a deadline, or "don’t hang up" and "don’t tell anyone".

04Do they want an unusual payment?

Gift cards, crypto, a wire transfer, Zelle or cash.

05Do they want to get into your computer?

Installing an app, or letting them connect to your screen.

06Did a pop-up or email give you a "support" number to call?
07Are they asking for a password, a code sent to your phone, or a bank login?

If it is a scam

  1. Stop. Hang up, don’t click, and don’t pay. Real companies never ask for gift cards or crypto.
  2. Pop-up won’t close? Don’t call the number. Force-quit the browser: Ctrl + Shift + Esc on Windows, Cmd + Option + Esc on a Mac.
  3. Already let them in or paid? Turn off your Wi-Fi, call your bank on the number printed on your card, and change your passwords from another device.
  4. Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
